President's Report

Nebraska ASHRAE Members,

We have just a few more months of the Society Year and spring is almost upon us. I hope you've been able to enjoy some of the nice weather!

As you likely saw, there is a bill on the floor at the state legislature to roll back building and energy codes to the 2009 versions. On February 24th, four of our chapter members (Jeff McCaslin, Corey Metzger, David Holtzclaw, and student, Julia Ehlers) testified in front of the Urban Affairs committee opposing the bill. The opponents substantially outweighed the proponents. If you haven't had a chance, please consider reaching out to your state senator asking them to oppose the bill should it advance out of the Urban Affairs committee. ASHRAE has made it very easy to do so - if you follow this link (https://www.votervoice.net/ASHRAE/campaigns/134166/respond), you can fill in your information and automatically email your senator. Thanks to Jeff and the Government Affairs Committee for their hard work this year!

We also had our annual Trivia Night last week. To no one's surprise, the event was competitive, and many of our chapter members showed off their trivia prowess. Congratulations to the winning team of Peter Koneck-Wilwerding, Sara Robbins, Jeff McCaslin, and Tyler Glesne!

March will be busy as well as we have a few events coming up. Keep an eye out for an email soon about our March Madness bracket challenge! This will be a fundraiser for our RP campaign, and prizes will be available for the top 3 participants. We also have our first annual Top Golf fundraiser coming up at the end of March. Reach out to Tony Mueller or Callen Schwank ([email protected]) if you are interested in a sponsorship for the event!

Our March meetings this month will cover water quality in open systems. The Omaha meeting will be a joint meeting with ASPE. Be sure to get registered soon. I hope to see you there!

Thank you for your support of Nebraska ASHRAE!

ASHRAE Member Testifies on Nebraska Building

Energy Code Legislation

On February 24, Jeff McCaslin, Government Affairs Chair for the Nebraska ASHRAE Chapter, provided testimony on behalf of ASHRAE to the Nebraska Legislature’s Urban Affairs Committee. The testimony was in opposition to LB 1134, a bill currently under consideration by the committee that would roll back the state’s energy code from the 2018 edition of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) to the 2009 edition, taking the energy code over a decade out of date. McCaslin described the energy efficiency gains that have been made in successive editions of ASHRAE Standard 90.1, Energy Standard for Sites and Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, a pathway in the IECC, and emphasized that those improvements, and the resulting reduced utility bills, would be lost by reverting the code back to an earlier edition. ASHRAE members Corey Metzger and David Holtzclaw, as well as ASHRAE student member Julia Ehlers, also attended the hearing. ASHRAE also sent a letter opposing the bill, which has not yet received a vote from the Urban Affairs Committee.

Nebraska Governor Signs Engineer’s Week Proclamation

On February 3, Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen signed a proclamation declaring the week of February 22–28, 2026 as Engineers Week. Jeff McCaslin, the Government Affairs Chair of ASHRAE’s Nebraska Chapter, coordinated the proclamation signing with the governor’s office. National Engineers Week, established in 1951, is an annual celebration of the engineering workforce focused on increasing interest in engineering careers. More information on National Engineers Week can be found here.

ASHRAE RESEARCH PROMOTION

research promotion spotlight

Target Goal: $25,250

Current Donations: $4400

Click the link below to donate to the 2025-2026 Nebraska Research Promotion fundraising campaign:

https://www.ashrae.org/about/invest-in-the-rp-campaign

If you do not have a specific area you would like your donation applied to (YEA, scholarships, etc.), please consider donating to the Nebraska Chapter's Endowment Fund!

  1. Choose the option "Endowed Research Funds"
  2. In the dropdown list next to "Apply To Existing Endowed Fund"
  3. Select "Nebraska Chapter Research Fund"

Donating to the endowment fund works similarly to growing an investment account. The more donations made to it, the larger the account grows. Every year, we are guaranteed a 5% minimum return on that investment which goes directly to research projects and counts towards our Chapter's RP fundraising goal for the year. In essence, the more we grow the fund, the easier it will be to improve our fundraising capabilities every year! If you regularly donate to the "ASHRAE Research" category, consider this as a way for your donation to have an even larger impact.

Again, THANK YOU to our donors!
