Presentation Title: Data Centers: Heat Load Testing

This presentation explores the evolving challenges of commissioning cooling systems in today’s rapidly growing data center market. The presentation reviews the fundamentals of chiller heat-load testing, traditional liquid-cooled load bank methods, and the factors driving the industry toward alternative approaches as data centers and individual rack loads continue to increase. It examines the use of temporary boiler systems and emerging high-volume hot-water solutions, including their operational, logistical, cost, and safety considerations. The presentation concludes with lessons learned from the field and strategies for planning heat-load testing early enough to avoid equipment shortages and commissioning delays.

Bio: Alex Taylor

Alex is a National Account Representative specializing in rental and equipment sales for WARE, one of the largest boiler rental, sales, & service companies in the United States, based out of Louisville, KY. A University of Kentucky graduate, his career started with Big Ass Fans before transitioning to the boiler industry. In over twelve years with WARE, Alex has overseen hundreds of planned boiler outages and emergencies in various facilities, including: schools, hotels, hospitals, prisons, military bases, factories, food & beverage production, refineries, data centers, and power plants--with projects taking place in both the United States and internationally.

He has overseen the expansion of WARE’s emergency hot water business, has had articles published on proper boiler maintenance, sits on advisory committees for the American Boiler Manufacturing Association, and represents WARE for the Council of Industrial Boiler Owners.

Nebraska GAC Spotlight

let the whole state hear ashrae cheer

For large holidays and events in society, states and municipalities often have proclamations. These are official statements by the state or municipality recognizing different things, and they are a way to raise awareness for causes and events. Any organization or individual is allowed to submit a request for proclamation to the state or municipality for consideration.

 It is noted by the municipality what is allowed to be submitted, and they can range from something as simple as a major work anniversary (probably only for a small municipality) to something as large and national as Engineers Week. Proclamations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. If another engineering society submits first, they are given the recognition on the proclamation over another group that submitted for the same event later. Municipalities have requirements for how early and how late you can submit to be considered for the proclamation.

For Nebraska ASHRAE, this is a great opportunity to raise awareness for engineering events and achievements. For the last few years, we have submitted proclamation requests for Engineers Week to Lincoln, Omaha, and the State, and have gotten it approved each time. For the state, if the proclamation is accepted, you are invited to come receive the proclamation paper and give a short speech regarding the importance of the event and the involvement of your group with regards to the event.

Submitting these proclamations gives Nebraska ASHRAE a few exciting benefits. First, the proclamation gives recognition to ASHRAE and engineering as a whole, with regards to the E-Week proclamation. Second, it gives our members valuable face time with state legislators and people in the governor’s office. This face time is invaluable as these individuals will often see us again when we are advocating for ASHRAE at our annual day-on-the-Hill events. The more they recognize us, the more likely they will be to reach out and ask us for professional opinions on the bills that we would weigh in on. Third, it gives us an opportunity to invite other state senators or local officials to participate in the event with us, giving us more face time and interaction with these individuals.
