President’s Message

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and is looking forward to the Holiday Season. Even though this time of year can fly by, it is my hope that everyone can take a few moments to reflect on things for which they are grateful. I also would respectfully ask you to consider those that are less fortu-nate during the holiday season by do-nating time, resources, or talents. This is also a good time to highlight how donations to ASHRAE re-search dollars are spent and the impact they have not only on our entire industry, but also how they support local research.

ASHRAE has been supporting research since 1919. The most significant ASHRAE research has been in the are-as of human comfort and the properties of materials and systems used in build-ing and refrigeration systems. As we are now in the colder months of the year I thought it would be a good idea to show some of the ASHRAE research projects helping us through the heating season:

  • Technical and Economic Feasibility of Combined Cooling, Heating, and Power (CCHP) Systems for Com-mercial Buildings.
  • Development of Software to Calcu-late the Application Seasonal Effi-ciency of Commercial Space Heat-ing Boiler Systems Based on ASHRAE Standard 155P.
  • Update of U-factors, Solar Heat Gain Coefficients and Visible Transmittances of Standard Fenes-tration Units made from Repre-sentative Fenestration Frame and Glazing Systems in the Fenestra-tion Chapter of the Handbook of Fundamentals

The results of these research projects and many more like them are used to provide updates to the ASHRAE Hand-books, help in providing the background on ASHRAE Journal articles, or pub-lished in special publications including the Advanced Energy Design Guide-lines.

By donating to ASHRAE research in the state of Nebraska we are able to see on amazing return on investment. Last year the Nebraska Chapter raised $23,470 and this year we have a goal of $22,300 which we hope to exceed again. Currently there are two projects in the state funded by ASHRAE re-search dollars. These projects are:

  • 1705-RP: Investigation of Airside Fouling on Outdoor Heat Exchang-ers - $134,962
  • 17-18: Automated Fault Detection and Diagnosis Methods for Supermarket Equipment - RP-1615 - $5,000

It is awesome to see how the donations from Nebraska have such strong returns for research occurring right here in our state!

This year the Nebraska Chapter’s Re-search Promotions committee is led by Nick Mandel and Kyle Heberly. If you would like to make an end of the year contribution to ASHRAE, please contact either Nick at or Kyle at I hope this holiday season when you are thinking of how you can give back to your local community, you will consider donating to ASHRAE Research.
